The rapid development of artificial intelligence in recent years has, up to now, seen limited regulation. Last summer, the European Union became the first jurisdiction to propose a horizontal regulatory framework for artificial intelligence. This scope of the proposal is still subject of a contentious debate. It seems likely, though, that it will be adopted and have – like the General Data Protection Regulation of the EU – extraterritorial impact, on both sides of the Atlantic. A geopolitical element is also in play, as the actions of other major players, such as China, in this technological field remain unclear.
